LASIK vs. EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): Which Is Right for You?

Woman before refractive surgery

LASIK is the procedure most people recognize for vision correction—but for those with high prescriptions, thin corneas, dry eyes, or who have difficulty wearing contact lenses, EVO ICL implantable lenses (also known as implantable contact lenses) may offer a better alternative. At PureSight Surgical, Marietta ophthalmologist Dr. Jordan Stanley specializes in EVO ICL surgery, a safe, lens-based alternative to LASIK that delivers clear, lasting vision improvements without altering the natural shape of the eye.

If you’ve been told you’re not a LASIK candidate (or are looking for a more advanced and comfortable solution), this guide is for you. Below, we break down the differences between LASIK and EVO ICL so you can make an informed decision about which vision correction solution may be right for you.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of laser vision correction that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors. During LASIK, a laser is used to create a flap in the cornea and remove corneal tissue to improve how light is focused on the retina. It’s an outpatient procedure and most people experience clearer vision within 24 hours and can return to work within a few days.

While effective for many, LASIK comes with limitations. It may not be recommended if you have dry eyes, thin corneas, or high levels of nearsightedness. However, even if you’ve been turned away from LASIK, there’s a good chance ICL may still be an option for you.

Moreover, even for those who fall within the eligibility range for LASIK, EVO ICL can often be a better choice due to its visual performance, comfort, and long-term safety profile.

Dr. Stanley was very patient and generous with his time! I understand much more about my eyes now and simple techniques to take care of them long term! It’s obvious that Dr. Stanley is passionate about his patients and loves what he does. I was unaware of a new surgical option for those not wanting to do LASIK which is less invasive with better results! Highly recommend Puresight Surgical!”

What is ICL?

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
Precise lens alignment ensures the implant works seamlessly with your natural lens to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism.

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a thin, flexible lens that Dr. Stanley places inside the eye, behind the iris, and in front of the natural lens. It corrects moderate to severe nearsightedness and astigmatism without altering your cornea. The latest EVO ICL™ lenses also eliminate the need for peripheral iridotomies (creating tiny openings in the iris) to improve fluid flow in the eye.

Once in place, the ICL works like a contact lens inside the eye and offers crisp, high-definition vision (but without daily maintenance). The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is performed with numbing eye drops and optional light sedation. Many patients see vision improvement immediately, with full results seen after 1-2 weeks. You can safely resume your full normal routine, including exercise and physical activity, within 5-7 days.

Why choose ICL over LASIK?

ICL offers unique advantages that make it one of the safest and most effective LASIK alternatives available today:

  • Preserves the natural structure of the eye and does not remove corneal tissue
  • Reduces dry eye risk and is ideal for patients with existing dry eye symptoms
  • UV protection helps filter harmful UV rays
  • High prescription capability, treating nearsightedness up to -20.00 diopters
  • Reversible and upgradeable so the lenses can be removed or replaced if your vision needs change in the future (LASIK cannot be reversed)
  • Better night vision with fewer issues with halos, starbursts, or glare

For patients with thin corneas, dry eyes, or strong prescriptions, EVO ICL is often the better—and only—option.
